Come and enjoy a fabulous evening of ghost hunting at this 17th Century hotel, if you’re brave enough?
The Chopping Knife, recorded in 1635 stood on the site now known as The Antrobus Hotel. There are extensive cellars and tunnels believed to connect to the church opposite and Amesbury Abbey which was the family seat of The Antrobus family who owned Stonehenge.
Four tenements were pulled down to make way for the present building known as Wyndersham House in 1848. This was a private home which later became a school and a vicarage.
It’s life as a hotel began in 1923, becoming a temperence hotel known as The Avon, named after the River Avon it stands beside. The hotel was renamed The Antrobus in 1962 and has had some famous visitors. The Beatles stayed here while making their movie ‘Help!’ and it was used as a location for a BBC Miss Marple episode, ‘Nemesis’.
Described as ‘friendly’, activity has been reported by staff and guests alike, but there is one spirit residing in the cellar who doesn’t always like to share his spaceThere have been several apparitions including a little old lady and playful children. Lights and tv’s turn themselves on and off and objects move by themselves, including our renowned lantern!
